Single Room Occupancy Residence: Processes Linking Housing to Not Engaging in HIV Outpatient Care

Helen-Maria Lekas et al.

Summary: Homelessness and housing instability have negative impacts on engagement in medical care and health outcomes among persons with HIV/AIDS. This study focused on the experiences of individuals living in single room occupancy (SRO) residences and found that despite the unhygienic and unsafe conditions, residents remained in the SRO system for extended periods of time, leading to a lack of stability and control in their lives, which affected their adherence to medical care. Efforts are needed to transform SROs into housing that promotes the health and well-being of its residents.
