Age and Hospitalization Risk in People With Type 1 Diabetes and COVID-19: Data From the T1D Exchange Surveillance Study

Summary: This multicenter study found that the risk of hospitalization and adverse outcomes in COVID-19 patients with type 1 diabetes is age-dependent. Age older than 40 years is a risk factor for hospitalization in patients with type 1 diabetes and COVID-19, while children and younger adults experience milder disease and better prognosis. This indicates the need for age-tailored treatments, immunization, and clinical management.

COVID-19 Hospitalization in Adults with Type 1 Diabetes: Results from the T1D Exchange Multicenter Surveillance Study

Summary: Diabetes mellitus, especially type 1, has been linked to higher morbidity and mortality in COVID-19 cases. This study analyzed characteristics of adults with type 1 diabetes to identify factors associated with COVID-19 hospitalization. Older age, non-Hispanic Black ethnicity, public insurance, hypertension, lower use of continuous glucose monitoring or insulin pumps, and higher HbA1c levels were found to be associated with higher likelihood of hospitalization. Improved glycemic control and access to care are crucial in optimizing care for type 1 diabetes patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
