Herbicides as anthropogenic drivers of eco-evo feedbacks in plant communities at the agro-ecological interface

Veronica Iriart et al.

Summary: Herbicides act as selective agents and disruptors in natural communities, leading to phenotypic and compositional shifts. These shifts influence species interactions, drive evolution, and have complex feedback effects on ecology and ecosystem functions. To gain a predictive view of herbicide-impacted communities, future research should address the impacts of ecology on evolution and the feedbacks between evolution and ecology.

Approaches to herbicide (MCPA) pollution mitigation in drinking water source catchments using enhanced space and time monitoring

Phoebe A. Morton et al.

Summary: The study found that MCPA was widely present in a surface water source catchment, with occurrences positively correlated to sub-catchments with higher proportions of 'Improved Grassland' land use. The prevalence of high concentrations of MCPA poses costly problems for water source treatment. Using the data, simulations were conducted to explore the potential to reduce intake of water containing high concentrations of MCPA by stopping abstraction in different scenarios.

Trends in crop production and land productivity in northern Ghana: A case study of Tolon-Kumbung

Katsushige Nakasone et al.

Summary: The study in two villages in northern Ghana found that cultivated area and crop variety are decreasing, while farmers aiming to increase production with chemical fertilizer are increasing. However, labor force is diminishing and fertilizer cost is rising. Improving agricultural input distribution system and providing selective mechanization are necessary to address labor needs and sustain crop production.

Effect of climate variability on yields of selected staple food crops in northern Ghana

Frank Baffour-Ata et al.

Summary: Agriculture in Ghana is vulnerable to climate variability, posing a challenge to food security. Research in northern Ghana found a marginal decrease in annual rainfall and a significant increase in temperature, resulting in substantial variability in yields of staple food crops. Temperature, number of dry days, onset, annual rainfall, and cessation were significant factors influencing crop yields. Adaptations such as agricultural diversification and use of drought-tolerant crop varieties are needed to address the impacts of climate change on food production.
