Mycelium-Based Composites in Art, Architecture, and Interior Design: A Review

Maciej Sydor et al.

Summary: Mycelium-based composites (MBCs) are gaining attention for their low production cost, eco-friendly nature, and high artistic value. However, they have limitations in terms of load capacity, water affinity, and reliability. The literature suggests that the material parameters of MBCs can be adjusted to specific needs, but there are countless combinations. Patent documents indicate the need for development in increasing density and achieving a more homogeneous internal structure. Our own experiments show that the natural inhomogeneity of MBCs can result in interesting surface textures.

Abhinav Bhardwaj et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between psyllium husk powder content and print quality when using biomass-fungi composite materials for 3D printing. The results showed that an increase in psyllium husk powder to water ratio improved print quality up to a certain point, beyond which extrudability deteriorated. This phenomenon was explained by analyzing the rheological properties of the mixtures.

Tilted Arch; Implementation of Additive Manufacturing and Bio-Welding of Mycelium-Based Composites

Behzad Modanloo et al.

Summary: Bio-based materials, particularly fungi-based materials, have gained traction in architectural design and fabrication in recent years. One subgroup of these materials, mycelium-based composites, are attracting interest due to their lightweight, compostable, and regenerative properties. Despite being introduced to the architectural community for about a decade, the proper ways of designing and fabricating with mycelium-based composites are still being explored. This paper integrates the material properties of mycelium-based composites with computational design and digital fabrication methods to propose a promising construction method, utilizing additive manufacturing parallel to bio-welding.
