Theory of puppets?: A critique of the use of puppets as stimulus materials in psychological research with young children

Martin J. Packer et al.

Summary: Many studies on young children's understanding of others' actions use puppets, toys, or fictional characters as stimuli, raising concerns about the ecological validity and the relationship between ethnopsychology and scientific psychology. This may ultimately reveal more about children's theory of puppets than their understanding of human behavior.

Prevalence and predictors of children's persistent screen time requests: A national sample of parents

Sarah E. Domoff et al.

Summary: This study found that children's persistent requests for screen media may be related to increased parental time spent on social media, but not other screen media. Additionally, children's use of smartphones and engagement with online videos were independently related to persistent requests, while the total quantity of screen media use by children was unrelated to persistent requests. Practitioners should consider both child and parent screen media use characteristics when advising families on managing conflict around child screen media use.

Preschoolers' beliefs about media technologies: The role of family income

Carla Macias et al.

Summary: The study found that differences in family income may influence children's perceptions of media technologies, particularly in terms of their beliefs about media functions. Children from lower-income families were more likely to believe that smartphones could be used for learning, and were more likely to attribute impossible functions to physical books compared to children from higher-income families.

Jennifer M. Clegg et al.

Summary: This study compared caregiver teaching practices in the United States and Vanuatu during a collaborative problem-solving task, revealing that caregivers in both populations adjusted their behaviors based on task difficulty and child age. U.S. caregivers exhibited a direct active teaching style typical of formal education, while Ni-Vanuatu caregivers used practices associated with informal education.
