A Domain-Differentiated Approach to Everyday Emotion Regulation From Adolescence to Older Age

Jennifer A. Bellingtier et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the occurrence and effectiveness of flexible emotion regulation in response to daily hassles from different domains within the age range from adolescence to old age. The results showed that strategy use varied across individuals and domains. Different domains of hassles elicited different emotion regulation strategies, and hassles involving multiple domains led to the use of more emotion regulation strategies. However, flexible emotion regulation was not necessarily associated with lower hassle reactivity.

Summary: Resilience is defined as maintaining or quickly recovering mental health during and after adversity. The challenge lies in operationalizing resilience and determining factors leading to good mental health outcomes in stress-exposed individuals. The proposed FRESHMO paradigm involves monitoring stress exposure and mental health problems regularly to study mental health reactivity to stress.
