Marmot hunting during the Upper Palaeolithic: The specialized exploitation at Grotte di Pradis (Italian pre-Alps)

Nicola Nannini et al.

Summary: In recent years, several studies have reevaluated the importance of small game in the subsistence economy of hunter-gatherers in Europe and the Mediterranean region. Some unusual faunal assemblages have been recorded in the Alpine arch and the Prealpine belt. This report presents zooarchaeological data from Grotte di Pradis in northeastern Italy, showing the significant exploitation of marmot during the Late Glacial period and its impact on the foraging systems and energy balance.

Virtual Surgical Planning and the In-House Rapid Prototyping Technique in Maxillofacial Surgery: The Current Situation and Future Perspectives

Fabio Maglitto et al.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive summary of the clinical applications of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) in maxillofacial surgery, and reviews the experience using an in-house rapid prototyping technique. The study focused on reconstructive surgery, traumatology, and COVID-19 masks, showing that the low cost and efficiency make this method applicable to a large number of cases for both ordinary and extraordinary activities.

A 41,500 year-old decorated ivory pendant from Stajnia Cave (Poland)

Sahra Talamo et al.

Summary: The discovery of a decorated ivory pendant from the Paleolithic layers at Stajnia Cave in Poland marks the oldest known human-modified punctate ornament, dating back to 41,500 years ago. This unique piece establishes a new starting point for a tradition directly linked to the spread of modern Homo sapiens in Europe.

Early Alpine occupation backdates westward human migration in Late Glacial Europe

Eugenio Bortolini et al.

Summary: Significant cultural and population changes occurred in Southern Europe around 18-17 thousand years ago, as hunter-gatherers gradually recolonized the Alps due to retreat of glaciers. The Late Epigravettian phase saw a replacement of genetic lineages, believed to be influenced by migrations during a warmer climate period about 14.7 thousand years ago. New genetic evidence suggests a population replacement event in Southern Europe, coinciding with major cultural transitions, dated back by at least 3 thousand years compared to previous beliefs.

The cranial biomechanics and feeding performance of Homo floresiensis

Rebecca W. Cook et al.

Summary: The study explores the feeding biomechanics of Homo floresiensis and finds that they were able to produce bite forces with high mechanical efficiency, but may have been constrained by tensile jaw joint reaction forces during molar biting. The inferred feeding biomechanics of Homo floresiensis closely resemble those of modern humans, suggesting this pattern may have been present in the last common ancestor of Homo sapiens and H. floresiensis.
