Maternal diet, nutritional status and infant birth weight in Malaysia: a scoping review

Hamid Jan Jan Mohamed et al.

Summary: In this systematic review, it was found that Malaysian pregnant women had inadequate intake of micronutrients compared to national recommendations. Increased fruit intake was associated with higher infant birth weight, while factors such as high pre-pregnancy BMI, excessive gestational weight gain, and high blood glucose levels were associated with fetal macrosomia. Low pre-pregnancy BMI, inadequate gestational weight gain, intake of confectioneries and condiments, and high blood pressure were associated with low birth weight.

Bruna C. Schneider et al.

Summary: The study found that gestational weight gain of grandmothers and mothers can impact the child's body mass index, suggesting that the effect of GWG may be transmitted across three generations. Therefore, health education during gestation for women and their families will be necessary to manage this issue.
