But They Told Us It Was Safe! Carbon Dioxide Removal, Fracking, and Ripple Effects in Risk Perceptions

Emily Cox et al.

Summary: Reaching net-zero global greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 will require a range of new technologies and approaches, but negative perceptions towards CO2 removal technologies due to risk perceptions and policy controversies surrounding shale gas and fracking could hinder societal agreement. Participants' attitudes are influenced by deeper mistrust towards experts and policymakers, potentially undermining trust in the safety and efficacy of CO2 removal technologies.

Establishing a large-scale Greenhouse Gas Removal sector in the United Kingdom by 2030: First mover dilemmas

Mark Workman et al.

Summary: In June 2019, the UK legislated a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This will require the development of a technical Greenhouse Gas Removal (GGR) sector, potentially generating over 60 million metric tons of negative emissions annually by 2050. In October 2021, the UK pledged to deploy at least 5 million metric tons of engineered negative emissions by 2030. However, the current deployment of engineered negative emissions is less than 0.5 thousand metric tons annually. Scaling up to meet the targets for 2030 and 2050 will require coordinated engagement from first movers and integration of multiple value chains, along with substantial societal engagement. This scaling is crucial for addressing the impacts of climate change and presents both financial and non-financial challenges.
