Conceptualizing, Contextualizing, and Operationalizing Race in Quantitative Health Sciences Research

Elle Lett et al.

Summary: Differences in health outcomes across racial groups are commonly found in health disparities research. However, these studies often fail to connect these disparities with systemic racism, unintentionally supporting harmful narratives of biological essentialism or cultural inferiority. This paper highlights the pitfalls in quantitative population health research and provides recommendations for understanding racial health inequities appropriately.

Intersecting Structural Oppression and Suicidality Among Black Sexual Minority Male Adolescents and Emerging Adults

Devin English et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between structural racism, anti-LGBTQ policies, and suicide risk among young sexual minority men. The findings show that for Black participants, both structural racism and anti-LGBTQ policies are significantly associated with various negative outcomes, including depressive symptoms, heavy drinking, self-harm, and suicide attempt. The association between structural racism and these outcomes is stronger for Black participants in states with higher levels of anti-LGBTQ policies. However, there is no significant association between these factors and suicide risk for White sexual minority men.

Characterizing Health Inequities for the US Transgender Hispanic Population Using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System

Elle Lett et al.

Summary: This study reveals that transgender Hispanic (TH) individuals in the United States are less likely to have health insurance and a regular provider, and more likely to face cost barriers to care and HIV risk factors compared to transgender White (TW) and cisgender Hispanic (CH) individuals. However, they reported fewer days of poor health and activity limitations, and were less likely to report depression. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing the unique challenges faced by TH individuals in accessing healthcare.
