Word predictability effects are linear, not logarithmic: Implications for probabilistic models of sentence comprehension

Trevor Brothers et al.

Summary: During language comprehension, contextual information helps identify word meaning, and there is a strong linear relationship between lexical predictability and word processing times. These findings challenge surprisal theory and support a proportional pre-activation account of lexical prediction effects in comprehension.

Does signal reduction imply predictive coding in models of spoken word recognition?

Sahil Luthra et al.

Summary: The study found that despite not explicitly implementing prediction, the TRACE model of speech perception exhibits the characteristics of predictive coding. Results suggest that reductions in total lexical activation, total lexical feedback, and total phoneme activation may be related to predictive coding, but caution is needed in interpreting neural signal reduction as a diagnostic of predictive coding.
