Power and Poverty in China: Why Some Counties Perform Better in Poverty Alleviation?

Mengyao Li et al.

Summary: This study focuses on 832 nationally designated poor counties in China and finds that the presence of a county party committee secretary holding a higher rank position above the county level significantly increases the odds of accomplishing poverty alleviation tasks. In contrast to the emphasized role of empowering people in democracies for poverty reduction, this research demonstrates that empowering key governmental actors in authoritarian regimes can help improve the performance of poverty alleviation.

Selection of targeted poverty alleviation policies from the perspective of land resources-environmental carrying capacity

Hongwei Zhang et al.

Summary: Selecting appropriate targeted poverty alleviation policies and exploring their implementation path are crucial for achieving comprehensive poverty alleviation in China by 2020. This study establishes the LRECC index and CCD model to quantitatively assess the effects of LRECC differences in production, living, and ecological spaces on poverty alleviation. It also examines the relationship between poverty incidence and LRECC, and prioritizes and optimally selects targeted poverty alleviation policies based on geographical association coefficients. The findings indicate the importance of selecting suitable policies based on regional advantages and poverty incidence for sustainable regional development.

Livelihood resilience and the generative mechanism of rural households out of poverty: An empirical analysis from Lankao County, Henan Province, China

Erling Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a theoretical framework for explaining the paths to achieving the livelihood resilience of rural households after shaking off poverty, based on surveyed results in Lankao County in Henan province of China. The study finds that the livelihood resilience of households who have escaped poverty is closely related to their capacity to utilize accessible resources, learn new knowledge, and exploit external resources. Households with modern agricultural productive systems or living in specialized villages have a higher level of resilience.

The critical role of trust in experiencing and coping with energy poverty: Evidence from across Europe

Katrin Grossmann et al.

Summary: This paper explores the link between the experiences of households in a state of energy poverty and their trust in institutions and social networks. The study, based on qualitative data from ten European countries, shows that energy-poor households generally lack trust in both public and private institutions, reporting experiences of powerlessness, unfair treatment, and feelings of inferiority in their interactions with these institutions. Trust in networks or individuals within institutions can strengthen the coping capacities of energy-poor households, while a lack of trust can isolate individuals from potential support and deepen their state of energy poverty.
