Under threat: emotional and behavioral responses to occupational identity threat

Na Yang et al.

Summary: Previous research on identity threat has focused primarily on the consequences of threat to assigned or involuntary identities, neglecting individuals’ responses to occupational identity threat. This study integrates identity theory and identity threat literature to propose that encountering occupational identity threat results in negative emotion and feedback-seeking behavior, with negative emotion mediating the relationship between occupational identity threat and feedback-seeking behavior. Additionally, individuals’ performance self-esteem strengthens both the direct and indirect effects of occupational identity threat on negative emotion and feedback-seeking behavior, respectively. Results from two experimental studies and one field study support these predictions.
