Morphology and permeability of bio-based poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) blend films control shelf-life of packaged bread

Nattinee Bumbudsanpharoke et al.

Summary: Blending PBAT and PBS modified the morphology and permeability of bio-based films, while blending with LLDPE resulted in incompatibility. LLDPE/PBAT films had lower T-alpha than neat PBAT and LLDPE, while T-alpha of PBAT/PBS blends decreased with increasing PBS content, indicating diverse polymer compatibility and molecular mobility.

Responsive Polyesters with Alkene and Carboxylic Acid Side-Groups for Tissue Engineering Applications

Stella Afroditi Mountaki et al.

Summary: This study focused on enhancing the properties of main chain polyesters by incorporating pH-responsive functionalities through specific chemical reactions. The modified polyesters showed adjustable pK alpha values and water solubilities, which were influenced by the alkyl chain length and carboxylic acid content. Furthermore, the biocompatibility of the cross-linked polyester films was improved, especially on surfaces with shorter alkyl chains and higher carboxylic acid functionalities, promoting cell viability, proliferation, and attachment.

Zn(II)- and Mg(II)-Complexes of a Tridentate {ONN} Ligand: Application to Poly(lactic acid) Production and Chemical Upcycling of Polyesters

Jack M. Payne et al.

Summary: The synthesis and characterization of two homoleptic Zn(II)- and Mg(II)-complexes based on a simple tridentate {NNO} ligand are reported. These complexes exhibited high activity for the production of biocompatible atactic poly(lactic acid) (PLA) under industrially relevant melt conditions. Additionally, they facilitated rapid PLA methanolysis into methyl lactate (Me-LA) under mild conditions, achieving high yields within short reaction times. Further analysis found them to have among the highest reported k(app) values, showing promise for diverse applications in upcycling strategies.

Understanding the Steric Structures of Dicarboxylate Ions Incorporated in Octacalcium Phosphate Crystals

Taishi Yokoi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the steric structures of twelve different dicarboxylate ions incorporated into OCP by comparing experimentally determined interlayer distances with molecular sizes calculated based on their steric structures. The results show that succinate, glutarate, adipate, pimelate, suberate, and aspartate ions have linear structures, while azelate, sebacate, methylsuccinate, and malate ions exhibit bent structures. Additionally, the steric structure of the incorporated malonate ion significantly differs from others. This computational approach deepens understanding of dicarboxylate ions in OCP interlayer spaces.
