Luminescence of Ti-Sapphire coatings prepared by plasma electrolytic oxidation and their application in temperature sensing

Aleksandar Ciric et al.

Summary: 15 mu m thick Ti-Sapphire coatings were successfully synthesized using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method on pure aluminum substrates with the addition of TiO2 particles. The coatings exhibit typical Ti-Sapphire photoluminescence features and show potential as multifunctional barrier-level optical temperature sensor materials.

Structurally induced tuning of the relative sensitivity of LaScO3:Cr3+ luminescent thermometers by co-doping lanthanide ions

K. Elzbieciak-Piecka et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of transition metal ions, such as Cr3+, in remote temperature sensing using ratiometric luminescence thermometry. By co-doping LaScO3:Cr3+ with various lanthanide ions, the luminescence properties can be tuned, affecting the thermal quenching behavior and offering a new approach for potential future applications.

Internal OH- induced cascade quenching of upconversion luminescence in NaYF4:Yb/Er nanocrystals

Yansong Feng et al.

Summary: Internal hydroxyl impurities have been identified as detrimental factors affecting the upconversion efficiency of upconversion luminescence nanomaterials. By quantifying and adjusting the internal hydroxyl impurity in NaYF4 nanocrystals, researchers have unraveled the microscopic interactions underlying UCL quenching and proposed a concept of Survivor effect to explain the UC dynamical process involving internal hydroxyl. The new quantitative insights obtained from this study are expected to promote the development of highly efficient UC materials.

From quencher to potent activator - Multimodal luminescence thermometry with Fe3+ in the oxides MAl4O7 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba)

K. Kniec et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of Fe3+ ion as a sensitive luminescence thermometry in aluminate hosts and proposes different modes of luminescence thermometry. By selectively changing the Fe-O bond distances, the relative sensitivity in CaAl4O7:Fe3+,Tb3+ can be modulated to values as high as around 2% K-1, with connected relative temperature uncertainties of around 0.3%.

A method for the growth of uniform silica shells on different size and morphology upconversion nanoparticles

Elena Urena-Horno et al.

Summary: The text discusses the potential of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles for biomedical applications and the necessity of silica coating for dispersion and surface functionalization. It also highlights the challenges in creating a silica shell around the nanoparticles and presents a method to predict the experimental conditions for a high yield of silica-coated nanoparticles.

Upconversion luminescence and temperature sensing properties of NaGd(WO4)2:Yb3+/Er3+@SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles

Lu Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of a SiO2 shell coating on the optical properties and thermal sensitivity of core-shell UCNPs, revealing that the SiO2 coating can significantly enhance the temperature sensitivity. The research also found that analyzing the fluorescence intensity ratio of non-thermally coupled levels can lead to even higher temperature sensitivity in certain conditions.
