High Prevalence of Perineural Cysts in Patients with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Mieke Hulens et al.

Summary: The prevalence of Tarlov cysts (TCs) in patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia (FM) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) was found to be three times higher than in the general population. This observation supports the hypothesis that symptomatic TCs, FM, and CFS may share the same pathophysiological mechanism of moderately increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure causing irritation of neurons and axons in dorsal root ganglia.

Global incidence of spinal perineural Tarlov's cysts and their morphological characteristics: a meta-analysis of 13,266 subjects

Tomasz Klepinowski et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis revealed a global incidence of approximately 4.18% for spinal perineural cysts, with a higher prevalence among women compared to men. The S2 level of the sacral bone was most commonly affected. Correspondence with symptoms was low, underscoring the need for further studies with stronger evidence levels to confirm the results.

A systematic review of the efficacy of surgical intervention in the management of symptomatic Tarlov cysts: a meta-analysis

Michelle M. Kameda-Smith et al.

Summary: The study systematically analyzed outcomes of patients with symptomatic Tarlov cysts treated with either surgery or conservative management. The post-operative complication rate was 16.9% and cyst recurrence rate was 8.5%. Long-term follow-up revealed that 81.0% of patients remained symptom-free for over 1 year.

Spinal Perineural Cysts among European Patients

Piotr Kozlowski et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prevalence and morphology of perineural cysts detected incidentally in patients with symptomatic degenerative disk disease through retrospective MRI data. Perineural cysts were found in 9% of the 3,128 spinal MRI examinations, mostly located in the sacral region. They were more common in women, with an average patient age of 54.8 years and an average longest dimension of 11.72mm for the cysts.

Tarlov Cyst Rupture and Intradural Hemorrhage Mimicking Intraspinal Carcinomatosis

Tejaswi Sudhakar et al.

Summary: This case report describes a rare presentation of a ruptured lumbosacral Tarlov cyst with intraspinal hemorrhage that was diagnosed using percutaneous biopsy and managed conservatively with excellent outcomes. In such cases, consideration should be given to a ruptured hemorrhagic Tarlov cyst as part of the differential diagnosis to guide appropriate clinical management decisions.
