Interaction of synthetic jets with a massively separated three-dimensional flow field

Nicholas Rathay et al.

Summary: The interaction of an array of finite span synthetic jet actuators with a massively separated flow was explored experimentally. The activation of jets was found to reduce separation and enhance velocity, but may negatively impact each other in certain cases. The severity of separation was found to be more pronounced in the outboard region compared to the inboard region, leading to different responses to the jets.

Passive Flow Control for Drag Reduction on a Cylinder in Cross-Flow Using Leeward Partial Porous Coatings

Imogen Guinness et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of leeward porous coatings on the drag of circular cylinders in cross-flow using numerical simulations. It found that partial leeward porous coatings caused an increase in pressure on the leeward side, reduced pressure and aerodynamic force fluctuations, and had a damping effect on vortex shedding. The study also showed a significant reduction in turbulence intensity at the outlet, leading to a drag reduction of 5-16% with the optimum configuration at a 7 degrees coating angle.

On the noise reduction of a porous trailing edge applied to an airfoil at lifting condition

Christopher Teruna et al.

Summary: Numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the aerodynamic and Reynolds number effects on the aeroacoustics of a porous trailing-edge insert. The noise reduction produced by the porous insert decreases with increasing angle-of-attack and Reynolds number, attributed to the phase interference effect of the porous structure. The pressure release process occurring across the porous medium surface plays a critical role in noise attenuation.
