Decomposition of Leaf Litter from Native and Nonnative Woody Plants in Terrestrial and Aquatic Systems in the Eastern and Upper Midwestern USA

Summary: Leaf litter decomposition plays a crucial role in nutrient cycling in terrestrial and aquatic systems. The decay rates are influenced by species, habitat, climate, and local environmental conditions. This study found significant variation in decomposition rates among different locations in the USA, regardless of air temperature or precipitation levels. Contrary to expectations, lower temperatures and precipitation were associated with higher decomposition rates in both terrestrial and aquatic habitats in locations with multiple years of data. Additionally, the presence of native leaf litter may slow down the decomposition of invasive leaf litter.
