Towards defining reasonable minimum composition thresholds - Impacts of variable CO2 stream compositions on transport, injection and storage

Heike Ruetters et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential impacts of CO2 streams with different compositions and mass flow rates on CCS chains, and recommends the definition of reasonable minimum composition thresholds. The findings suggest that there are both beneficial and adverse impacts of different impurities and their combinations, but no fundamental technical obstacles were observed in transporting, injecting, and storing CO2 streams with variable compositions and mass flow rates. The study proposes defining minimum composition thresholds for each specific CCS project based on overall CO2 content, maximum impurity or element contents, acceptable variability of critical impurity concentrations, and avoidance of specific impurity combinations.

Predicted CO2 water rock reactions in naturally altered CO2 storage reservoir sandstones, with interbedded cemented and coaly mudstone seals

J. K. Pearce et al.

Summary: The feasibility of industrial-scale CO2 geological storage in the Jurassic Precipice Sandstone of the southern Surat Basin, Queensland, Australia is being studied. The Precipice Sandstone reservoir is suitable for storage, with mineral trapping mainly occurring in the overlying Evergreen Formation and in interbedded mudstones.

Geological storage of CO2 and acid gases dissolved at surface in production water

J. K. Pearce et al.

Summary: The traditional method of geological CO2 storage involves injecting CO2 into a high permeability reservoir capped by a low permeability seal. Another method involves injecting CO2 dissolved in water, which can enhance storage security. Geochemical modeling on different reservoir rocks indicated the potential for both mineral trapping and dissolution trapping of CO2 over time.

Micro CT and Experimental Study of Carbonate Precipitation from CO2 and Produced Water Co-Injection into Sandstone

Julie K. Pearce et al.

Summary: Carbon dioxide geological storage involves injecting captured CO2 streams into a suitable reservoir. Mineral trapping of CO2 in carbonate minerals is considered a secure form of trapping, and co-injection of CO2 with water may enhance the trapping mechanisms. Produced waters can be re-injected into reservoirs to provide a source of cations for enhancing mineral trapping, as observed in experimental reactions with sandstone samples.

Summary: The capture and storage of low-purity CO2 through advanced membrane technology for geological storage is environmentally acceptable and economically viable. This method reduces transport costs and ensures social acceptance by allowing CO2 production and storage in remote areas like deserts and offshore platforms.
