Towards a Soil Remediation Strategy Using Biochar: Effects on Soil Chemical Properties and Bioavailability of Potentially Toxic Elements

Fotis Bilias et al.

Summary: This review examines the application of biochar in soil remediation, highlighting its effects on soil properties and the bioavailability of potentially toxic elements. Research areas such as earthworm activities, greenhouse gas emissions, and low molecular weight organic acids have received significant attention in recent years. Biomasses like rice straw, sewage sludge, and sawdust are commonly used as feedstocks for biochar production, and mechanisms responsible for PTEs immobilization with biochar are briefly discussed. Special attention is given to specific PTEs commonly found in contaminated soils, and suggestions are made for developing innovative methodologies for engineered biochars to enhance soil remediation strategies.

Biochar and fertilizer improved the growth and quality of the ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L.) shoots in a coastal soil of Yellow River Delta, China

Xiangwei You et al.

Summary: Wood chip biochar (WBC) can improve the growth of ice plants in coastal soil, enhance nutritional quality, increase photosynthesis, and reduce oxidative stress. Ameliorated soil properties and increased nutrient contents resulting from WBC amendment contribute to the enhanced growth and quality of ice plants. Additionally, changes in the microbial community in soil modified with WBC may also help improve the growth and quality of ice plants.

Effects of thinning and understory removal on the soil water-holding capacity in Pinus massoniana plantations

Ting Wang et al.

Summary: Forest management practices play a crucial role in regulating soil water-holding capacity in plantations. This study used stable hydrogen isotopes to explore how rainfall events affect soil water in Pinus massoniana plantations under different management practices. It was found that soil properties were the main factors directly affecting soil water-holding capacity, with light-intensity and no thinning practices showing greater capacity in retaining rainwater compared to heavy-intensity thinning.
