Global sustainability of carbon shadow pricing: The distance between observed and optimal abatement costs

Zhaohua Wang et al.

Summary: Carbon abatement costs, an important environmental assessment indicator, vary across countries at different development stages. This paper proposes a nonparametric approach to estimate the optimal carbon shadow price and investigates the disparity between observed and optimal prices among 152 countries worldwide from 1991 to 2019. The study finds an overall improvement in carbon shadow prices globally, but significant differences exist among countries.

Yield and water productivity of crops, vegetables and fruits under subsurface drip irrigation: A global meta-analysis

Haidong Wang et al.

Summary: Subsurface drip irrigation (SSDI) is an efficient water-saving irrigation technology that can improve crop yield and water productivity (WP). However, its effects vary with field managements, climatic conditions, and soil properties. SSDI performs best under specific environmental conditions.

Optimal irrigation amount can increase cotton lint yield by improving canopy structure and microenvironment under non-film deep drip irrigation

Nannan Li et al.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of using non-film deep drip irrigation instead of film drip irrigation to solve the problem of residual film pollution in Northwest China. The results show that optimizing the irrigation amount of non-film cotton can improve the canopy environment, increase biomass accumulation, and achieve efficient and clean cotton production.

Non-film mulching comprehensively improved plant growth and yield of cotton in a deep-drip irrigation system under arid regions

Nannan Li et al.

Summary: Plastic film mulching under drip irrigation is a key technology for water saving and yield increase. However, long-term promotion has led to film pollution issues. Deep drip irrigation and optimized irrigation can improve yield and water use efficiency in non-film cotton cultivation.

Institutional quality and its spatial spillover effects on energy efficiency

Huaping Sun et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the spatial effect of institutional quality on energy efficiency using a panel data of 99 countries (economies) from 1995 to 2016. The results confirm the positive impact of institutional quality on energy efficiency and suggest that being close to countries with good institutional framework has a positive effect on domestic energy efficiency.

Technology Adoption and Output Difference Among Groundnut Farmers in Northern Ghana

Dominic T. Konja

Summary: The study examines the adoption of improved groundnut production technologies among farmers in Northern Ghana, finding that factors such as household size, distance to district capital, and access to credit significantly influence technology adoption. The study also shows that adopters of these improved technologies had higher average output levels compared to non-adopters. The study highlights the importance of drawing lessons from such research for projects and policies related to technology uptake in the region.

Impact of information acquisition on farmers' willingness to recycle plastic mulch film residues in China

Wei Yang et al.

Summary: Based on sample data from Yunnan province in China, this study found that information acquisition has a positive and significant impact on farmers' recycling choices, with higher information intensity increasing the likelihood of recycling plastic film residues. Understanding the role of information acquisition can help policymakers focus on knowledge diffusion to better manage plastic residues and promote sustainable agricultural production practices.

Assessing the socio-economic viability of solar commercialization and electrification in south Asian countries

Huaping Sun et al.

Summary: Solar power is a promising alternative energy source for developing countries in Asia, particularly in South Asian countries, with sufficient solar irradiance for power production. The study in Sindh Province, Pakistan, highlights the economic viability of off-grid solar photovoltaic systems, which can provide electricity at a lower cost compared to traditional energy sources while reducing CO2 emissions. The implementation of off-grid solar energy systems can provide a renewable roadmap for energy in South Asian countries and remote regions.
