Muhamad A. K. Shakhatreh et al.

Summary: Utilizing Citrobacter freundii extract and sunlight, aqueous Ag+ ions were reduced, resulting in the formation of spherical Ag-NPs with sizes ranging from 15 to 30 nm. The synthesized Ag-NPs showed potent bactericidal activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as noticeable anti-biofilm activity against S. aureus. Ag-NPs induced minor cytotoxic effects on human dermal fibroblast cells, indicating potential as antimicrobial agents in pharmaceutical applications.

Summary: This study reviews the antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, showing promising potential for future therapeutic applications and efficacy against drug-resistant strains. AgNPs with smaller particle sizes have greater contact surface area with microorganisms, affecting their vital functioning. AgNPs adhere to the cytoplasmic membrane and cell wall of microorganisms, causing disruption, penetrating the cell, interacting with cellular structures, and inducing the generation of reactive oxygen species and free radicals.

Polymeric antibiofilm coating comprising synergistic combination of citral and thymol prevents methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation on titanium

Alaguvel Valliammai et al.

Summary: Microbial infections associated with biomaterials are challenging and often require revision surgery. To address this issue, recent treatment strategies have focused on modifying implant surfaces to prevent bacterial adhesion, with antibiofilm coatings proving to be an effective approach. This study identified the synergistic antibiofilm activity of citral and thymol, leading to the development of a polymeric antibiofilm coating that effectively inhibited MRSA adherence in vitro. The coating showed sustained release of active ingredients and was non-toxic, demonstrating its potential for clinical applications in preventing biomaterial-associated infections.
