Emerging role of exosomes as biomarkers in cancer treatment and diagnosis

Niloofar Asadi Hanjani et al.

Summary: Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, with rapidly growing incidence and mortality rates. The current methods used for cancer diagnosis and treatment are invasive and cost-effective. Recent research has revealed the effective roles of exosomes as promising biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction. Exosomes, which are membrane-bound extracellular vesicles containing genetic material and proteins, can detect various types of cancers at early stages with high sensitivity and specificity, and can also efficiently deliver therapeutic drugs.

Paper-based biosensors for cancer diagnostics

Claudia Pereira et al.

Summary: Implementing a widespread diagnostic campaign for early cancer detection could save millions of lives and billions of dollars annually. However, current approaches to cancer diagnosis are complex and expensive, limiting their use in low- and middle-income settings. This article explores the technical challenges in achieving precise cancer diagnostics and discusses the potential of paper-based sensors as widely available sensing platforms for cancer detection. The authors also present their vision on how to make paper-based sensors a commonly used diagnostic tool for cancer.
