Phthalate metabolites in paired human serum and whole blood

Zhenming Li et al.

Summary: The distribution pattern of phthalate metabolites (PMs) in human blood was investigated in this study. It was found that mono methyl phthalate, mono (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, and mono butyl phthalate were the predominant PMs in both serum and whole blood samples. The mean serum concentrations of PMs were higher in females than males.

Phthalate metabolites: Characterization, toxicities, global distribution, and exposure assessment

Ying-Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: Phthalates, commonly used as plasticizers, have metabolites that may impact human health differently across regions, with Asia, America, and Europe showing variations in exposure levels. Urine is the preferred matrix for assessing phthalate exposure, and more accurate molar fractions of metabolites related to ingested compounds should be collected for different populations in epidemiological or pharmacokinetic studies.

Legislation to limit the environmental plastic and microplastic pollution and their influence on human exposure

Ilaria Conti et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution is a new and growing concern, caused by post-consumer plastic waste accumulation and mismanaged waste programs. Countries are implementing various strategies such as bans, recycling initiatives, and awareness campaigns to combat plastic litter. The toxic effects of plastics on organisms and the environment are not only due to their polymer chains, but also to the hazardous additives and pollutants they contain, which are ingested by marine organisms and enter the food chain, highlighting the importance of legislation on additives and contaminants to reduce environmental pollution and toxicity.

Chemotherapeutic drugs in Lebanese surface waters: estimation of population exposure and identification of high-risk drugs

Yolande Saab et al.

Summary: This research analyzed the consumption of anticancer drugs in Lebanon and assessed their potential health hazard as contaminants of surface waters. High-risk priority compounds were identified based on calculated PEC values, emphasizing the importance of further analysis of chemotherapy micropollutants. Recommendations were made for regulations to ensure proper management of wastewater and the development of efficient wastewater treatment plants.

Phthalate Exposures in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Randall Jenkins et al.

Summary: The study shows that in a neonatal unit, infants receive 98% of DEHP exposure from respiratory devices, with bubble CPAP accounting for 95% of the total exposure. By avoiding the use of IV tubing containing DEHP and modifying respiratory equipment appropriately, DEHP exposure can be significantly reduced.
