Anthropogenic and natural inputs of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the sediment of three coastal systems of the Brazilian Amazon

Edgar A. R. Lima et al.

Summary: PAH concentrations in surface sediment samples from three cities along the Brazilian Amazon coast were generally low, reflecting baseline levels for the estuarine system; Different cities showed variations in PAH sources and composition, linked to local industrial emissions and wastewater treatment practices.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface waters from the seven main river basins of China: Spatial distribution, source apportionment, and potential risk assessment

Haiyan Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, long-term measurements of PAHs in surface waters of seven river basins across China were reported. The pollution level of PAHs was higher in North China than in South China, with coal and biomass combustion identified as the main contributors. Some individual PAH concentrations exceeded environmental quality standards, and certain river basins were found to be at moderate or high risk of contamination.

Riverine transport and water-sediment exchange of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) along the middle-lower Yangtze River, China

Zhonghua Zhao et al.

Summary: The study revealed that sediments in the Yangtze River act as a secondary emission source and sink for PAHs, contributing to higher risks downstream. Elevated PAH levels in developed areas were linked to economic factors, primarily from coal and vehicle emissions. Water runoff was identified as the main transport pathway for PAHs in the middle-lower Yangtze River, while dam impoundment upstream led to decreased sediment discharge and increased retention effect.

Bioaugmentation strategy to enhance polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons anaerobic biodegradation in contaminated soils

Alberto Ferraro et al.

Summary: This study proposed an innovative bioaugmentation approach for PAH contaminated soils based on a habitat-based strategy, testing two different inocula with specific functional roles. Results showed a successful bioaugmentation strategy with higher biodegradation rates and increased microbial diversity, supporting an integrated and environmentally sustainable bioremediation system.
