Association between Dietary Nitrate, Nitrite Intake, and Site-Specific Cancer Risk: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Kassim Said Abasse et al.

Summary: This study provides evidence of varying associations between dietary intakes of nitrate and nitrite and site-specific cancer risks. Higher nitrite intakes are associated with an increased risk of glioma, bladder cancer, and stomach cancer, while lower risk of pancreatic cancer. Higher nitrate intakes are associated with an increased risk of thyroid cancer and a lower risk of kidney cancer.

Anti-tumor effects of vitamin D in glioblastoma: mechanism and therapeutic implications

Carmen Sze-Ching Lo et al.

Summary: Vitamin D demonstrates anti-tumoral activity in glioblastoma by promoting cell death and inhibiting tumor growth, while also reducing cell migration and invasiveness. Upregulation of vitamin D receptors may enhance its anti-tumor effects by its analogs in glioblastoma.

The Association between Dietary Total Antioxidant Capacity and Glioma in Adults

Marzieh Heydari et al.

Summary: A hospital-based case-control study conducted in 2011 in Iran found an inverse association between dietary total antioxidant capacity (TAC), as well as dietary intake of vitamin C, vitamin B6, and beta-carotene, with the odds of glioma in adults. This suggests that higher TAC and intake of certain vitamins may be protective against glioma development.

Targeting Folate Metabolism Is Selectively Cytotoxic to Glioma Stem Cells and Effectively Cooperates with Differentiation Therapy to Eliminate Tumor-Initiating Cells in Glioma Xenografts

Masashi Okada et al.

Summary: The study found that folate antagonists such as MTX and pemetrexed have selective cytotoxic effects on GSCs, suggesting that folate metabolism may be a promising target for anti-GSC therapy. Furthermore, the combination of cytotoxic and differentiation therapies may be a novel approach to effectively eliminate cancer stem cells.

Summary: This study found no association between plasma concentrations of 25(OH)D and retinol with glioma risk in three cohorts. However, further investigation is needed on the potential association between alpha- and gamma-tocopherol and glioma risk.
