Urban life promotes delayed dispersal and family living in a non-social bird species

Alvaro Luna et al.

Summary: The study focused on the burrowing owl, a non-social, monogamous species, and found that delayed dispersal and family living occur in urban and rural habitats. The results showed that delayed dispersal, mainly by males, was more common in urban areas with high conspecific density and productivity. While delaying dispersal did not increase nest productivity, it did improve the body condition of chicks and slightly increase offspring survival probabilities in the future. Delayed dispersers were also recruited as breeders in high-quality urban territories.

Seasonal variation in sex-specific immunity in wild birds

Jose O. Valdebenito et al.

Summary: The study found that immune system in birds exhibit both sex differences and seasonal variations, with males showing higher immune responses and abilities during the breeding season. The study also revealed that sex differences in immune status are more pronounced during the breeding period compared to the non-breeding period.
