Differential Modulation of the European Sea Bass Gut Microbiota by Distinct Insect Meals

Fabio Rangel et al.

Summary: The aquaculture industry is rapidly growing, but reliance on wild fish-based meals for carnivorous fish farming is unsustainable. Insect-based diets show promise as fishmeal substitutes, but their impact on farmed fish gut microbiota remains inconclusive and research on microbial functions is scarce.

Digestive enzyme activity and nutrient digestibility in meagre (Argyrosomus regius) fed increasing levels of black soldier fly meal (Hermetia illucens)

Ines Guerreiro et al.

Summary: Partially replacing fishmeal (FM) with black soldier fly larvae meal (HM) in meagre diet resulted in decreased nutrient digestibility and digestive enzyme activity, but replacement of up to 17% FM with HM did not have major adverse effects on diet digestibility and digestive enzyme activity.

Intestinal microbial communities of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) may be improved by feeding a Hermetia illucens meal/low-fishmeal diet

Simona Rimoldi et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effects of dietary insect meal from Hermetia illucens larvae on the gut microbial community of rainbow trout. The inclusion of insect meal in the diet led to an increase in beneficial bacteria and a reduction of pathogenic bacteria, shaping the metabolic activity of the trout gut microbiota. Insect meal from H. illucens is a promising protein source for trout nutrition, with potential to improve fish health by modulating the gut microbial community.

Gut microbiota dynamics in carnivorous European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fed plant-based diets

Claudia R. Serra et al.

Summary: A healthy gastrointestinal microbiota is vital for host fitness and is strongly affected by host diet. Feeding carnivorous fish plant-based diets high in non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) can lead to changes in gut microbiota composition, favoring bacterial families with carbohydrate active enzymes. Overall, the gut communities of European seabass respond to plant-based diets by adjusting to the presence of transient microorganisms with carbohydrolytic potential while maintaining a balanced core microbiota.

Configuration of Gut Microbiota Structure and Potential Functionality in Two Teleosts under the Influence of Dietary Insect Meals

Nikolas Panteli et al.

Summary: Insect meals are being explored as potential eco-friendly alternatives for aquafeed, with this study showing that different insect species used as fish feed ingredients can elicit species-specific responses in the gut microbial communities of juvenile reared Dicentrarchus labrax and Sparus aurata. The research also highlighted significant differential effects on metabolic pathways in the gut microbiota of the two fish species in response to the insect meal diets.
