Advancing the implementation of nature-based solutions in cities: A review of frameworks

Bjorn Wickenberg et al.

Summary: This paper aims to explore how frameworks address the implementation of nature-based solutions (NBS) and identify key elements and conditions needed for enabling the implementation process. It suggests that multi-stakeholder collaboration and co-creation of knowledge are crucial for developing actionable knowledge and adapting NBS to societal challenges, in order to make them relevant to broader society.

Platform Dedicated to Nature-Based Solutions for Risk Reduction and Environmental Issues in Hilly and Mountainous Lands

Audrey Baills et al.

Summary: The PHUSICOS platform focuses on collecting and analyzing nature-based solutions for reducing disaster risk associated with extreme hydro-meteorological events in mountainous and hilly lands. It currently references 152 literature NBS cases and is continuously enriched through contributions from the NBS community, offering a qualitative assessment of the NBS according to 15 criteria.

Innovation in NBS Co-Design and Implementation

James M. Strout et al.

Summary: PHUSICOS, an EU Horizon 2020 program, focuses on demonstrating the use of nature-based solutions to mitigate hydrometeorological hazards in rural and mountainous areas. The project emphasizes nurturing innovation, maintaining market focus, and ensuring relevance for the intended recipients, with key success criteria being up-scaling and mainstream implementation of NBS for broader market access. An innovation strategy and supporting tools have been developed for implementing this within the project.

Review on the cooling potential of green roofs in different climates

Elmira Jamei et al.

Summary: Green roofs have a cooling effect in different climates, with the most significant cooling effect observed in dry climates and the lowest in hot-humid climates. In hot-humid cities, green roofs can reduce surface temperatures by 30 degrees Celsius, while the reduction is relatively lower in temperate climates. No study has explored the impact of green roofs on surface temperature reduction in dry climates.

Assessing the long-term effectiveness of Nature-Based Solutions under different climate change scenarios

Eulalia Gomez Martin et al.

Summary: This study emphasizes the importance of developing scientifically-based and customized information on climate change impacts as a precondition for designing and implementing Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). A System Dynamic model was developed to analyze the dynamic behavior of NBS in response to different scenarios of climate change and socio-economic contexts.

Stakeholder Participation in the Planning and Design of Nature-Based Solutions. Insights from CLEVER Cities Project in Hamburg

Alessandro Arlati et al.

Summary: Cities play a crucial role in addressing complex environmental and social challenges like climate change, with nature-based solutions (NbS) being recognized as part of the solution. Implementing NbS in urban contexts requires collaboration among various stakeholders, and this paper discusses the experiences and challenges in establishing and managing NbS-related processes in Hamburg under the EU-funded CLEVER Cities project. The research identifies key factors and roles of stakeholders in NbS planning, providing recommendations for future policy agendas in cities.

Implementing Nature-Based Solutions in Rural Landscapes: Barriers Experienced in the PHUSICOS Project

Anders Solheim et al.

Summary: Nature-based solutions are increasingly vital in political agendas for reducing hydrometeorological hazards, but barriers in their practical implementation mainly stem from institutional factors, stakeholder resistance, and technical/economic issues. The PHUSICOS project aims to demonstrate NBS in rural and mountain landscapes, but experienced challenges have led to cancellation of planned interventions.

Mapping the Research Landscape of Nature-Based Solutions in Urbanism

Lei Li et al.

Summary: Nature-based solutions, an innovative concept that mimics natural ecosystems, have gained popularity in the European Union. Research related to NBS is strongly associated with concepts like ecosystem services, green infrastructure, climate change, and risk management. The quantity and thematic focus of NBS research are unevenly distributed globally, with emerging trends including adaptive governance and social justice integration.

Are field boundary hedgerows the earliest example of a nature-based solution?

Marcus J. Collier

Summary: The debate over the effectiveness of nature-based solutions for mitigating the impacts of anthropogenic environmental change is ongoing. While there is little evidence to support the potential efficacy and impact of these solutions, the paper uses hedgerows as an exemplar to demonstrate the success and benefits of nature-based solutions in practice.

Global prevalence of non-perennial rivers and streams

Mathis Loic Messager et al.

Summary: Flowing waters play a crucial role in supporting global biodiversity, biogeochemical cycles, and human societies. However, the prevalence and significance of non-perennial rivers and streams are often overlooked, contributing to the degradation of water sources and livelihoods. By analyzing global data, it was found that a significant portion of the world's rivers experience at least one day of flow cessation each year, challenging traditional river concepts and highlighting the importance of considering intermittence in river management.
