Gut microbes in cardiovascular diseases and their potential therapeutic applications

Ling Jin et al.

Summary: The microbial ecosystem in the gut and its potential impact on human health, particularly in relation to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), have gained significant attention. The imbalance of gut microbiota has been linked to various chronic diseases, including CVDs, which are influenced by genetic and environmental factors. The therapeutic potential of using gut microbiomes to treat CVDs is being explored, with the possibility of utilizing gut microbes for clinical treatments in the future.

Ketone Ester Treatment Improves Cardiac Function and Reduces Pathologic Remodeling in Preclinical Models of Heart Failure

Salva R. Yurista et al.

Summary: Chronic oral supplementation with ketone esters showed effectiveness in preventing and treating heart failure in two preclinical animal models. The ketone diets attenuated left ventricular dysfunction and remodeling, reprogrammed gene expression related to ketone body utilization, and normalized myocardial ATP production following myocardial infarction.

Delivery of Acetate to the Peripheral Blood after Consumption of Foods High in Short-Chain Fatty Acids

Paul A. Gill et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify SCFA in commonly consumed foods and beverages, and explore the pharmacokinetics of consuming oral SCFA from dietary sources. Acetate was found to be the most abundant SCFA detected, with kombucha and vinegar providing high levels of acetate. An acute pharmacokinetic study showed that consuming a vinegar drink significantly increased plasma acetate concentration, indicating the potential for systemic delivery of SCFA through fermented foods and beverages over time.

Short-Chain Fatty Acids Outpace Ketone Oxidation in the Failing Heart

Andrew N. Carley et al.

Summary: The study revealed that short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are oxidized more readily than ketones in failing hearts, serving as a potential unexplored carbon source for energy production. Despite both SCFAs and ketones bypassing reduced CPT1 activity, SCFAs show higher oxidation rates and may represent a promising alternative energy substrate for failing hearts.

Cardiac Energy Metabolism in Heart Failure

Gary D. Lopaschuk et al.

Summary: Changes in cardiac energy metabolism are complex and depend on the severity and type of heart failure, as well as the presence of common comorbidities such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. The failing heart experiences an energy deficit due to decreased mitochondrial oxidative capacity, compensated for by increased ATP production from glycolysis. Alterations in mitochondrial ATP production fuels and fatty acid oxidation contribute to the inefficiency of the failing heart, with potential therapeutic targets in energy metabolic pathways to improve cardiac function.
