Metabolomic profiling in small vessel disease identifies multiple associations with disease severity

Eric L. Harshfield et al.

Summary: Cerebral small vessel disease is a major cause of vascular cognitive impairment and dementia. Metabolomics can be used to identify novel risk factors, predict disease progression and severity, and provide new insights into disease pathogenesis and treatment approaches.

Association between liver fibrosis and incident dementia in the UK Biobank study

Summary: The study evaluated the association between middle-aged liver fibrosis and incident dementia, finding that liver fibrosis was associated with an increased risk of dementia independent of other shared risk factors. The results suggest that liver fibrosis may be an underrecognized risk factor for dementia.

Intermittent Fasting Alleviates Cognitive Impairments and Hippocampal Neuronal Loss but Enhances Astrocytosis in Mice with Subcortical Vascular Dementia

Faris Rizky Andika et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of intermittent fasting (IF) on cognitive impairments and cerebrovascular pathologies in a subcortical vascular dementia (SVaD) mouse model. Results showed that SVaD mice on the IF regimen exhibited improved cognitive performance and higher hippocampal neuronal density compared to SVaD mice fed ad libitum. However, SVaD-IF mice also showed increased astrocytosis in the hippocampus. The findings suggest that IF could be a potential nonpharmacological remedy for SVaD and other neurovascular diseases.

White matter hyperintensities and risks of cognitive impairment and dementia: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 36 prospective studies

He-Ying Hu et al.

Summary: The presence of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) is linked to an increased risk of cognitive impairment and dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. Higher grade WMH and progressive increases in WMH volume or severity are associated with greater risks of dementia. These findings suggest that WMH could serve as a neuroimaging indicator of dementia.

Summary: This study investigated the association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and dementia, finding no direct link between NAFLD and dementia risk. However, liver histology parameters, especially fibrosis, significantly improved the prediction of dementia risk.
