Ultrafast electron dynamics in platinum and gold thin films driven by optical and terahertz fields

V. Unikandanunni et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ultrafast electron dynamics triggered by terahertz and optical pulses in thin platinum and gold films through probing their transient optical reflectivity. The response of the platinum film to an intense terahertz pulse is similar to the optically induced one, while the gold film exhibits a much smaller terahertz pulse-induced reflectivity change with the opposite sign compared to the optical case. The results provide fundamental insights into the ultrafast processes relevant to modern electro- and magneto-optical applications.

THz spintronic emitters: a review on achievements and future challenges

Evangelos Th Papaioannou et al.

Summary: THz spintronics is a research direction that combines magnetism, optical physics, and ultrafast photonics. The experimental scheme involves using femtosecond laser pulses to trigger spin and charge dynamics in thin films. Key challenges include increasing intensity, shaping frequency bandwidth, and controlling the transport of ultrafast spin current for radiation source control.

Efficient terahertz wave generation of diabolo-shaped Fe/Pt spintronic antennas driven by a 780 nm pump beam

Miezel Talara et al.

Summary: Efficient terahertz (THz) wave generation was achieved using Fe/Pt diabolo-shaped spintronic antennas with different Pt thicknesses, resulting in significant emission amplitude improvements. The enhancement is attributed to improved THz radiation outcoupling to free space and to enhanced THz emission with thicker Pt deposition in the displacement current direction. Proper design of these THz emitters can lead to efficient spintronic radiation sources.

Optical damage limit of efficient spintronic THz emitters

Sandeep Kumar et al.

Summary: THz pulses are generated from femtosecond pulse-excited ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic spintronic heterostructures via inverse spin Hall effect. The highest possible THz signal strength from spintronic THz emitters is limited by the optical damage threshold of the corresponding heterostructures at the excitation wavelength. For the thickness-optimized spintronic heterostructure, the THz generation efficiency does not saturate with the excitation fluence even up till the damage threshold.
