Mt. Everest's highest glacier is a sentinel for accelerating ice loss

Mariusz Potocki et al.

Summary: Based on the data from the world's highest ice core and highest automatic weather stations, this study reveals the significant contribution of melting and sublimation to the mass loss of Mt. Everest's highest glacier, South Col Glacier. The estimated thinning rates indicate that decades of accumulation may be lost annually now that the glacier ice has been exposed, highlighting the extreme sensitivity of Himalayan ice masses to glacier surface type. These findings warn of the emerging impacts as Mt. Everest's highest glacier is expected to undergo rapid retreat.

To denoise or to cluster, that is not the question: optimizing pipelines for COI metabarcoding and metaphylogeography

Adria Antich et al.

Summary: The study emphasizes the importance of combining denoising and clustering methods in COI metabarcoding. The UNOISE3 algorithm was found to better preserve intra-cluster variability in the study. The introduction of the DnoisE program incorporating the UNOISE3 algorithm based on natural variability was shown to increase the number of retained sequences by 88%.

Multiple-trophic patterns of primary succession following retreat of a high-elevation glacier

Weiming Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates soil community succession and biogeochemical characteristics at different stages of deglaciation on the Puca Glacier in the Peruvian Andes. The results show correlated increases in richness and species turnover in all soil groups, along with shifts in soil communities related to microbial enzyme activities and measures of C, N, moisture, and pH. Stoichiometric comparisons reveal P and C limitation of microbial activity across the chronosequence, indicating coordinated increases in trophic complexity and ecosystem functioning over the initial 90 years of microbial succession.
