Pore Filling of a Carbon Matrix by Melt-Impregnated LiBH4

Alejandra A. Martinez et al.

Summary: A study on the filling of a carbon matrix with pores of distinct sizes using LiBH4 was conducted, revealing that smaller pores are filled faster. Different resins were mixed to create a material with micropores and four populations of mesopores, leading to experiments with various volumes of LiBH4 and subsequent thermodynamic analysis. A two-step pore filling protocol was proposed to investigate the efficiency of doping the matrix with boron for improved filling, highlighting the inherent difficulties in reversibility of the system.

Ionic conductivity in complex metal hydride-based nanocomposite materials: The impact of nanostructuring and nanocomposite formation

Laura M. de Kort et al.

Summary: Complex metal hydrides have gained attention as solid electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries due to their desirable properties. This review highlights two strategies, nanostructuring and nanocomposite formation, to enhance the room temperature conductivity of complex metal hydrides. The achievements in nanostructured complex metal hydride-based ion conductors and complex metal hydride/metal oxide nanocomposite ion conductors are summarized, and the trends and challenges in their preparation are discussed. Furthermore, the reported all-solid-state batteries based on complex metal hydride nanocomposite electrolytes are highlighted. Future research directions and perspectives for improving metal hydride ion conductors and metal hydride-based all-solid-state batteries are proposed.

Summary: Composite solid-state electrolytes based on LDH/metal-borohydrides showed a significant increase in ionic conductivity, with LDH serving as an advanced track for improving the mobility of M-BH4 ions. The MgAl-LDH/LiBH4 composite demonstrated a five order of magnitude increase in room temperature ionic conductivity, surpassing most previously reported LiBH4-based SSEs.
