Graphene-like Carbon from Calcium Hydroxide

Alexander T. Brown et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the production of graphene-like carbon structures from calcium hydroxide. By utilizing acetylene, steam, and calcium hydroxide, crumpled carbon with high surface area and electrical conductivity was successfully synthesized. Additionally, the study investigated the significance and origin of the C 1s X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy pi-pi* plasmon loss peak related to high electrical conductivity, and proposed a unique mechanism for the catalytic process involving calcium acetylide. Multiple carbon morphologies were synthesized, including crumpled carbon, hollow nanospheres, bamboo-like carbon nanotubes, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and graphene fiber morphologies using calcium-based catalysts.

Synthesis of graphene mesosponge via catalytic methane decomposition on magnesium oxide

Shogo Sunahiro et al.

Summary: Graphene mesosponge (GMS) is a novel mesoporous carbon material mainly composed of single-layer graphene, synthesized using magnesium oxide (MgO) as a catalytic template for methane conversion. The activated MgO surface allows for relatively low activation energy in methane-to-graphene conversion, with the potential for easier production of single-layer graphene compared to traditional methods. The MgO-derived GMS possesses unique properties such as high surface area, developed mesopores, high oxidation resistance, softness, elasticity, and force-driven reversible liquid-gas phase transition, making it suitable for various applications including high-voltage supercapacitors and heat pumps.
