Fungicide Resistance in Fusarium graminearum Species Complex

Magda Antunes de Chaves et al.

Summary: The resistance of fusariosis to agricultural fungicides poses a problem in agriculture, as it can lead to an increase in mycotoxin production and impact the cereal grain production chain.

Diversity of Fusarium spp. Associated with Wheat Node and Grain in Representative Sites Across the Western Canadian Prairies

Mohamed Hafez et al.

Summary: This study collected wheat node and grain samples from four representative sites in western Canada and analyzed the major Fusarium spp. and other fungi associated with wheat. The results showed that Fusarium poae was the most abundant species in grain samples, while F. culmorum and F. avenaceum were the most abundant species in node samples. Trichothecene genotyping revealed differences in the distribution of trichothecene genotypes among different locations.

Advances in wheat breeding for resistance to Fusarium head blight

Kahsay Tadesse Mawcha et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the genetic studies on Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistance in wheat, including the sources of resistance, resistance gene/QTL mining, gene cloning, molecular marker identification, and resistance mechanisms. It also summarizes the achievements of resistance breeding based on phenotype selection and molecular markers. The authors suggest strengthening the resistance identification and screening, utilizing the additive effect of existing resistance genes, and enhancing research and utilization of new genes.

Genetics of Fusarium head blight resistance in soft red winter wheat using a genome-wide association study

Bikash Ghimire et al.

Summary: Host resistance is an effective strategy to manage the negative impacts of Fusarium head blight on wheat grain yield and quality. This study identified novel QTL associated with different types of FHB resistance, and stacking multiple resistance alleles led to a significant reduction in FHB incidence and severity. Further validation and integration of these QTL into breeding programs may enhance wheat resistance to FHB.

Building on a foundation: advances in epidemiology, resistance breeding, and forecasting research for reducing the impact of fusarium head blight in wheat and barley

W. G. Dilantha Fernando et al.

Summary: Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a major fungal disease causing significant economic losses in wheat and barley production worldwide. Advances in molecular biology have enabled the development of predictive management tools to combat the disease, focusing on epidemiology, mycotoxin production, evolutionary factors, and the use of next-generation sequencing technologies for breeding resistant lines. Future research should focus on improving forecasting models and exploring plant defense mechanisms to better manage the disease.

Population Genetic Structure and Chemotype Diversity of Fusarium graminearum Populations from Wheat in Canada and North Eastern United States

Abbot O. Oghenekaro et al.

Summary: Fusarium graminearum is the main pathogen causing Fusarium head blight in wheat in Canada, with different population diversity and mycotoxin chemotype variations observed in different geographic regions. The 3ADON chemotype showed a significant increase in Saskatchewan and Manitoba over the past 15 years, while the 15ADON chemotype was predominant in Ontario and the United States. High gene diversity was found in all regions, with high gene flow between Saskatchewan and Manitoba but less gene flow among the western provinces and Ontario as well as the USA isolates. Bayesian clustering analysis revealed two clusters correlated with trichothecene types, showing more admixture among isolates of the 3ADON chemotype, potentially influencing the virulence of F. graminearum. Understanding these genetic and chemotypical variations will aid in developing FHB resistant wheat varieties and assessing mycotoxin risks in Canada.

Patterns of Diversity of Fusarium Fungi Contaminating Soybean Grains

Maciej Zelechowski et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the main species of Fusaria in Polish soybean grains are F. avenaceum, F. equiseti, and F. sporotrichioides, most of which belong to the Equiseti clade. Additionally, three cryptic species were identified on soybean for the first time.

Phylogenetic and phenotypic characterization of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum isolates from Florida-grown watermelon

James C. Fulton et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pathogen population structure of Fusarium wilt of watermelon in Florida using multilocus sequence analysis, showing that using highly conserved housekeeping genes and loci did not clearly group and delineate different Fon races. Additionally, there were significant variations in aggressiveness among different isolates, indicating the need for future whole genome sequencing efforts to provide higher resolution of genetic distinctions within the species.

Sephra N. Rampersad

Summary: Genetic structure analysis revealed that the Fusarium incarnatum-equiseti species complex pathogen population was structured into three genetic clusters with high genetic diversity within the population from North Trinidad. Population stratification was reflected in the dendrogram topology, consisting of three main genetic clusters.
