Efficacy of CPP-ACP fluoride varnish applied with and without acid etching in preventing enamel demineralization compared to light-curable fluoride varnish

Moufida Abufarwa et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride varnish and light-curable resin modified glass ionomer fluoride varnish in preventing white spot lesions. It also evaluated the effect of acid etching on the efficacy of the casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride varnish. The results showed that both varnishes were effective in reducing enamel demineralization, and acid etching prior to the casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride varnish application increased its efficacy.

Summary: This study investigated the association between the government-provided fluoride varnish application services and dental caries experiences among schoolchildren in Taiwan. It found that children receiving 3 or more services were associated with a 36% decreased risk of having untreated caries in primary dentition, but these children were mainly in the low-risk group.

Effect of Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Coupled with Resin-Containing and Xylitol-Containing Fluoride Varnishes on Enamel Erosion

Zahra Khoubrouypak et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate enamel erosion after application of helium CAP and two types of fluoride varnishes. Results showed that CAP did not significantly increase enamel resistance to erosion, while fluoride varnish alone or combined with CAP significantly improved enamel resistance. CAP increased surface roughness, while fluoride varnish decreased it.

Effects of Fluoride and Calcium Phosphate-Based Varnishes in Children at High Risk of Tooth Decay: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Andrea Poza-Pascual et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of MI Varnish and Clinpro White Varnish applied every three months for 12 months in children with high caries risk on plaque indexes, salivary pH, lactic acid, and chemical elements concentrations. Though pH levels and lactic acid decreased at 12 months, they were not useful in determining high caries risk or monitoring varnish effects. However, new cavity formation was halted and hygiene improved, likely due to hygienic practices and fluoridated toothpaste use.

Prophylaxis of caries with fluoride for children under five years

Sophie Jullien

Summary: Collective fluoride interventions such as water fluoridation, salt or milk fluoridation, fluoride toothpaste, and topical fluorides (gels and varnishes) have been shown to be effective in preventing dental caries in children under 5 years of age. However, evidence for the effects of oral fluoride supplements is limited and inconsistent, as well as the effects of different levels of fluoride concentration in toothpastes.

Use of fluorides for caries prevention

Ulrich Schiffner

Summary: The use of fluoride preparations plays a crucial role in reducing caries burden and should be standardized from the eruption of teeth, avoiding excessive use. Fluoride toothpastes and varnishes have been proven to have preventive effects on patients of all ages.

Summary: The study found that 20% xylitol and Duraphat(TM) varnishes significantly increased enamel hardness, with xylitol varnishes also reducing enamel lesions. Therefore, xylitol varnishes may be effective alternatives to promote remineralization of newly erupted permanent and deciduous teeth.

Impact of Sociodemographic Factors on Dental Caries in Children and Availing Fluoride Treatment: A Study Based on National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) Data 2016-2019

Thevasha Sathiyakumar et al.

Summary: Dental caries is a global health issue that can be prevented through precautionary measures. This study found that children aged 6-11 had the highest prevalence and risk of tooth decay, as well as the highest association with receiving fluoride treatment. Sociodemographic factors such as age, gender, and race play a significant role in the prevalence of dental caries and access to preventative dental services, highlighting the importance of targeted interventions in high-risk groups.

Fluoride Varnishes for Preventing Occlusal Dental Caries: A Review

Alaa Baik et al.

Summary: Dental caries are most likely to occur on occlusal surfaces in children, with fluoride varnish being an effective method for prevention, especially for those at high caries risk. Both resin-based fissure sealants and fluoride varnish are effective for preventing occlusal caries in first-permanent molars, but it is unclear which one is more effective. Applying fluoride varnish two to four times per year is recommended for children at high risk of caries.
