A Self-Regulated Interface toward Highly Reversible Aqueous Zinc Batteries

Daliang Han et al.

Summary: By using a low-cost ammonium acetate (NH4OAc) additive, a self-regulated zinc/electrolyte interface is built to address the issues of rapid performance deterioration of zinc anodes. The additive induces a dynamic electrostatic shielding layer around the zinc protuberance, promoting uniform zinc deposition, and acts as an interfacial pH buffer to suppress side reactions and precipitation of insoluble by-products. These findings pave the way for practical zinc batteries.

Engineering zincophilic sites on Zn surface via plant extract additives for dendrite-free Zn anode

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: Aqueous Zn-ion batteries have the potential for large-scale energy storage due to their safety and cost-effectiveness. The addition of nettle extract helps to guide uniform zinc deposition on the anode, effectively suppressing dendrite growth and improving battery performance over extended cycling. This approach of engineering zincophilic sites through plant extracts opens up new possibilities for dendrite-free zinc anodes.

A non-flammable hydrous organic electrolyte for sustainable zinc batteries

Daliang Han et al.

Summary: Aqueous zinc batteries are safer than lithium-ion batteries, but their anodes are susceptible to dendrite failure and side reactions. The authors demonstrate a low-cost electrolyte that involves hydrate salt and organic solvent, proving to be non-flammable. The zinc battery cell delivers excellent performance even at low temperatures of -30 degrees Celsius.

Tuning Zn2+ coordination environment to suppress dendrite formation for high-performance Zn-ion batteries

Runzhi Qin et al.

Summary: The addition of ethylene glycol as an additive in aqueous electrolyte effectively inhibits the short-circuit issue induced by zinc dendrite growth in zinc-ion batteries, leading to longer cycling lifespan. By modifying the solvation sheath of zinc ions, the diffusion rate of zinc ions is reduced, promoting a uniform deposition morphology.

Potentiometric Measurement to Probe Solvation Energy and Its Correlation to Lithium Battery Cyclability

Sang Cheol Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, a potentiometric technique was introduced to quantitatively characterize the impact of Li+ solvation energy in battery electrolytes on performance, revealing a correlation between cell potential and cycling stability. We found that solvents weakly binding to Li+ lead to improved cycling stability, as weaker solvation results in an anion-derived solid-electrolyte interphase that stabilizes cycling. This potentiometric measurement provides a guide for engineering effective electrolytes for lithium metal anodes.

A cation selective separator induced cathode protective layer and regulated zinc deposition for zinc ion batteries

Buke Wu et al.

Summary: The study introduces the application of a Zn2+ substituted Nafion separator (Zn-Nafion) in aqueous rechargeable zinc ion batteries (ARZIBs), improving the performance of both the cathode and anode. The Zn-Nafion separator limits zinc dendrite growth on the anode side and promotes the H+ reaction on the cathode side, leading to enhanced energy density and capacity retention of zinc full cells. Additionally, the Zn-Nafion separator can be recycled multiple times without performance degradation, reducing the overall cost of the battery.
