Clay Minerals and Sr-Nd Isotope Compositions of Core CG 1601 in the Northwest Pacific: Implications for Material Source and Rare Earth Elements Enrichments

Zhongrong Qiu et al.

Summary: Rich sediments containing rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) were discovered in the deep-sea sediments of the Minamitorishima Island area in the Northwest Pacific. Analysis of clay minerals and Sr-Nd isotopes in a gravity core sample from the Southeast Sea area of Minamitorishima Island revealed that the sediments are mainly derived from terrestrial sources, likely East Asian dust. The sedimentary environment in the area is relatively stable, but the formation of high-grade REY-rich muds is difficult due to the large supply of terrigenous materials.

Geochemical record of the sediments in the continental shelf of the northwestern South China Sea: Implications for the provenance and sedimentary evolution

Ce Wang et al.

Summary: Analysis of major and trace elements in sedimentary rocks from the northwestern South China Sea revealed a predominant source from granitic rocks and immature sediments with weak to intermediate chemical weathering. The Red River catchment was identified as the primary source region for the northern Yinggehai-Song Hong Basin since the late Oligocene, with variations in element contents and ratios reflecting multi-stage tectonic activities and provenance shifts.
