Fabrication and mechanical properties of novel CFRP/Mg alloy hybrid laminates with enhanced interface adhesion

Xia Zhou et al.

Summary: A novel AZ31B magnesium alloy-based hybrid fiber metal laminates (Mg-FMLs) bonded with Mg-Zn-Al eutectic alloy solder have been prepared using ultrasonic vibration assisted hot pressing technology to enhance interfacial and mechanical properties. The metallurgically-bonded interfaces in the Mg alloy-based hybrid FMLs exhibit higher interlaminar and tensile performance compared to traditional epoxy resin-bonded Mg-FMLs. The synergistic effect from the Mg alloy sheet and CFRP layer contributes to the enhanced tensile properties of the Mg-FMLs.

Hybrid effect of carbon nano-fillers on the interlaminar fracture toughness of fiber metal laminates

Shuo Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the hybrid combination of graphene and multiwalled carbon nanotubes was evaluated for its effect on the interlaminar performance of fiber metal laminates. Different ratios of the hybrid carbon nano-fillers had varying effects on the mode I and mode II interlaminar fracture strain energy release rates. The scanning electron microscopy of the fracture surface revealed the synergistic toughening mechanism of the two hybrids.
