Are cause of death data for Shanghai fit for purpose? A retrospective study of medical records

Lei Chen et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the quality of cause of death reporting in Shanghai for both hospital and home deaths. Medical records were reviewed to establish a reference dataset and compare original and adjusted diagnoses. The results showed that the quality of original underlying cause of death assigned by doctors in the study facilities was relatively low, but improved after routine data checking procedures were applied.

Generating cause of death information to inform health policy: implementation of an automated verbal autopsy system in the Solomon Islands

Matthew Reeve et al.

Summary: The study details the establishment of a verbal autopsy system in the Solomon Islands to estimate cause specific mortality fractions for community deaths without medical certification. The results show that non-communicable diseases are the leading cause of adult deaths, and automated verbal autopsy methods are effective in generating reliable cause of death information for community deaths in the Solomon Islands.

Routine mortality surveillance to identify the cause of death pattern for out-of-hospital adult (aged 12+years) deaths in Bangladesh: introduction of automated verbal autopsy

Md. Toufiq Hassan Shawon et al.

Summary: In Bangladesh, a poorly functioning national system of registering deaths and determining their causes leads to lack of important information. In 2017, an improved death registration system and automated verbal autopsy were introduced, proving that automated methods are feasible, produce plausible results, and provide critical information on community causes of death.

Improving cause of death certification in the Philippines: implementation of an electronic verbal autopsy decision support tool (SmartVA auto-analyse) to aid physician diagnoses of out-of-facility deaths

Rohina Joshi et al.

Summary: The research developed SmartVA Auto-Analyse electronic decision support tool to assist Municipal Health Officers in certifying out-of-facility deaths in the Philippines. By using a standardized certification process and physician diagnosis, it successfully reduced the proportion of deaths with undetermined causes in home deaths.

Estimating causes of out-of-hospital deaths in China: application of SmartVA methods

Jinlei Qi et al.

Summary: A large pilot study in China showed that non-communicable diseases were the leading causes of death in all age groups and sexes, with stroke, ischemic heart diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, and lung cancer being the top causes after redistribution of undetermined causes. SmartVA was found to be a feasible and useful tool for improving the quality and standardization of cause of death data in China.
