Patient-Reported Outcomes in Randomized Controlled Trials of Patients with Multiple Myeloma: A Systematic Literature Review of Studies Published Between 2014 and 2021

Fabio Efficace et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review of recently published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in multiple myeloma (MM) to assess the use of patient-reported outcomes (PROs). The results showed a notable increase in the number of RCTs including PROs in MM research in recent years. However, there is still heterogeneity in the assessment and interpretation of PROs.

Myeloma Response Assessment and Diagnosis System (MY-RADS): strategies for practice implementation

Michael E. Mulligan

Summary: Structured reporting systems have been developed for various organ systems and disease processes, with numerous reports indicating that referring health care providers prefer them due to reduced variability of reports and increased confidence. Whole-body MR studies are recommended as the first-line imaging by the IMWG for patients with suspected asymptomatic myeloma, showing equal or greater sensitivity and specificity compared to PET/CT for detecting bone marrow involvement.

Symptom clusters and quality of life in ambulatory patients with multiple myeloma

Fengjiao Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated symptom clusters and associated clinical factors in multiple myeloma patients undergoing medication therapy, and examined the correlations between symptom clusters and patient quality of life. Three symptom clusters were identified: psychological; pain, dry mouth, and difficulty sleeping; and fatigue symptom cluster. These symptom clusters were found to be adversely correlated with patients' quality of life.

Reliability assessment of the definition of ultrasound enthesitis in SpA: results of a large, multicentre, international, web-based study

Andrea Di Matteo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the reliability of the OMERACT US Task Force definition of US enthesitis in SpA. The results showed good reliability for bone erosions, power Doppler signal at the enthesis, and enthesophytes/calcifications, but low reliability for entheseal thickening and hypoechoic areas. This raises questions about the definition of these components in the US diagnosis of enthesitis.

Retrospective longitudinal assessment of ultrasound gout lesions using the OMERACT semi-quantitative scoring system

Sara Nysom Christiansen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the responsiveness of gout-specific US lesions in patients receiving urate-lowering therapy and determined the most responsive US measure and optimal joint/tendon set for monitoring urate deposition. The semi-quantitative tophus and DC sum scores were found to be the most responsive measures, and a feasible joint/tendon set for monitoring was proposed.

A cross-sectional observational study of health-related quality of life in adults with multiple myeloma

Matthew R. LeBlanc et al.

Summary: The study found that multiple myeloma patients in the United States had poorer health-related quality of life compared to the general population, with factors such as socioeconomic status, comorbidities, and treatment status being associated with worse HRQoL outcomes. More research is needed to explore the relationship between treatment patterns and HRQoL, and to identify effective interventions.

An Individualized Exercise Intervention for People with Multiple Myeloma-Study Protocol of a Randomized Waitlist-Controlled Trial

Jennifer L. Nicol et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of exercise intervention on health-related quality of life in multiple myeloma patients. Through a randomized controlled trial, patients will be divided into exercise group and control group to observe and record changes in multiple indicators, including bone health and pain, fatigue, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, body composition, disease response, and blood biomarkers. The findings will provide evidence for determining whether exercise should be included as part of standard myeloma care.

Imaging in multiple myeloma: Computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging?

Alberto Stefano Tagliafico

Summary: Multiple myeloma is becoming more common in the elderly population, with bone disease contributing to increased morbidity and mortality. Detecting lytic bone lesions using imaging, such as CT and MRI, is crucial for distinguishing between asymptomatic and symptomatic MM patients. While radiology plays a key role in the staging and management of MM patients, there is still variability in the choice between MRI and CT, as well as suboptimal agreement among readers. The potential of medical imaging in MM is underestimated, and advancements in artificial intelligence, radiomics, and quantitative methods could improve its usage.

Multiple Myeloma: Role of Imaging in Diagnosis, Staging, and Treatment Response Assessment

Sameh Nassar et al.

Summary: Multiple myeloma, a common hematologic malignancy of plasma cells, requires different treatment approaches from precursor stages. Clinical diagnosis is essential, with imaging mainly used for staging, assessing therapy response, and monitoring disease progression. Various imaging modalities play a crucial role in managing multiple myeloma patients.

Quantitative Imaging and Radiomics in Multiple Myeloma: A Potential Opportunity?

Alberto Stefano Tagliafico et al.

Summary: Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a rare hematological disease that is more common in elderly patients, typically identified through hyperCalcemia, Renal failure, Anaemia, and lytic Bone lesions (CRAB). The extent of bone disease in MM negatively affects patients' quality of life and increases morbidity and mortality. Medical imaging, especially CT and MRI, plays a crucial role in staging and managing MM patients, with potential for further advancements through AI and radiomics.
