Comparison of Arterial Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Pediatric Stroke in Etiology, Risk Factors, Clinical Manifestations, and Prognosis

Sipang Pangprasertkul et al.

Summary: Stroke is a relatively rare condition in children, but it has a significant impact on their long-term health. This study aimed to identify and compare the causes, risk factors, clinical manifestations, and prognosis of ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes in children. The researchers retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 83 children diagnosed with stroke at a pediatric department in Thailand. Moyamoya disease/syndrome was found to be the most common cause of ischemic stroke, while cerebral arteriovenous malformation rupture was the most common cause of hemorrhagic stroke. Iron deficiency anemia was commonly associated with ischemic stroke. The time to diagnosis was delayed in both types of stroke. The mortality rate was higher in hemorrhagic stroke compared to ischemic stroke, and a significant proportion of children developed epilepsy during the follow-up period. The recurrence rate of stroke in children was low.

Childhood strokes in China describing clinical characteristics, risk factors and performance indicators: a case-series study

Summary: This study investigated the clinical characteristics, risk factors, neurological deficits, and medical care provided to children who had a stroke in China. Results showed that cerebral arteriopathy was a major risk factor for both arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) and hemorrhagic stroke (HS) in children living in China, with high rates of neurological deficits observed in these patients. Large epidemiological studies are needed to identify risk factors for stroke prevention and appropriate interventions.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed clinical characteristics, etiology, and mortality risk factors in pediatric non-traumatic spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage cases. The results showed that most patients had non-specific symptoms, cerebrovascular disease and hematological disease were the most common causes, and arteriovenous malformation was associated with lower risk of mortality.

Mortality and functional outcome after pediatric intracerebral hemorrhage: cohort study and meta-analysis

Gregoire Boulouis et al.

Summary: The clinical outcome of pediatric intracerebral hemorrhage is seldom reported comprehensively. Results from the study indicate that one in six children died after pICH, and the majority of children had residual neurological deficits at the latest follow-up. Children with vascular lesions as the etiology of pICH had significantly better clinical functional outcomes.
