Nucleic Acid Point-of-Care Testing to Improve Diagnostic Preparedness

Ilesh Jani et al.

Summary: Testing programs for SARS-CoV-2 have relied on PCR laboratory tests and rapid antigen assays, but their limitations in cost and accessibility have contributed to inequity in COVID-19 testing. Low-cost point-of-care nucleic acid tests have the potential to address these issues and improve pandemic preparedness, as well as strengthen primary healthcare services.

Electrochemical immunosensor for breast cancer biomarker detection using high-density silicon microneedle array

Muamer Dervisevic et al.

Summary: Electrochemical devices for transdermal monitoring show great potential for diagnosing diseases such as Cancer, especially breast cancer, by selectively capturing and quantifying key biomarkers like ErbB2. The high-density gold coated silicon microneedle arrays exhibit linear response over a wide concentration range and may pave the way for high-performing wearable point-of-care devices.

Survival of south african women with breast cancer receiving anti-retroviral therapy for HIV

Boitumelo Phakathi et al.

Summary: This study examined the survival rates of breast cancer patients in sub-Saharan Africa and found that HIV infection was associated with poorer overall and disease-free survival. Patients in advanced stages of the disease and with hormone receptor-negative breast cancer subtypes also had worse survival outcomes.

LAMP Diagnostics at the Point-of-Care: Emerging Trends and Perspectives for the Developer Community

Taylor J. Moehling et al.

Summary: LAMP technology has played a significant role in molecular diagnostics over the past decade, particularly in field-deployable applications in resource-limited regions. This review outlines front-end LAMP design practices for point-of-care applications and discusses challenges and opportunities for future development of LAMP assays. Despite its popularity, there are still areas for improvement in the fundamental understanding of LAMP to elevate the field of assay development and characterization.

Summary: This study found differences in clinicopathological and mammographic findings between DCIS and DCIS-MI, with certain characteristics such as large extent, high nuclear grade, comedo-type, and negative PR being identified as independent predictors of DCIS-MI. Mammographically, lesions with calcifications and regional calcifications were more likely associated with DCIS-MI.

Ultrasensitive and Highly Specific Lateral Flow Assays for Point-of-Care Diagnosis

Yilin Liu et al.

Summary: LFAs, paper-based point-of-care diagnostic tools, have traditionally lower sensitivities and specificities than standard laboratory tests. Recent efforts have focused on optimizing assay kinetics, signal amplification, and sample preamplification to increase sensitivities, as well as improving specificity through high-affinity molecules and assay optimization. With continuing improvements, LFAs may soon offer performance competitive with laboratory techniques while retaining a rapid format.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Sample Preparation Approach Influences PAM50 Risk of Recurrence Score in Early Breast Cancer

Tonje Lien et al.

Summary: The PAM50 gene expression subtypes and associated risk of recurrence (ROR) score are utilized to predict the risk of recurrence and the benefits of adjuvant therapy in early-stage breast cancer. The Prosigna assay includes PAM50 subtypes and clinicopathological features for treatment recommendations in hormone-receptor-positive early breast cancer. The impact of different RNA extraction methods on ROR scores, especially in luminal tumors, may lead to changes in treatment recommendations for a minority of cases.
