Thermal regime of sedimentary basins in the Tarim, Upper Yangtze and North China Cratons, China

Nansheng Qiu et al.

Summary: Thermal regime and thermal history play a crucial role in basin dynamics and hydrocarbon generation of source rocks. There are significant differences in thermal regimes among three typical cratons in China: North China Craton (NCC), Yangtze Craton (YC), and Tarim Craton (TC). The thermal regimes of the Bohai Bay Basin, Tarim Basin, and Sichuan Basin were studied in this paper. The study provides important geothermal evidence for hydrocarbon generation and phase distribution of oil and gas in deep and/or ultra-deep basins.

Source rock potential, main depocenters, and CO2 occurrence in the pre-salt section of Santos Basin, southeast Brazil

Rene Rodrigues et al.

Summary: This study focused on the source potential, basin depocenters, and CO2 occurrence in the pre-salt of Santos Basin to reduce the risk of hydrocarbon charge and contamination in exploration activities. It was found that Late Barremian-Early Aptian fine-grained rock intervals from the Itapema and Picarras Formations are likely the main source rocks. The distribution of CO2 revealed low to high amounts in different areas, with a deep-seated fault system potentially contributing to high CO2 content.

Sedimentology and petrophysical analysis of pre-salt lacustrine carbonate reservoir from the Santos Basin, southeast Brazil

Mateus Basso et al.

Summary: Lacustrine carbonate deposits in the Campos and Santos Basins in Brazil are significant reservoirs for oil and gas production. A study on the Barra Velha Formation in the Santos Basin found that the relationship between depositional framework and poroperm system is complex, with factors such as dolomite cementation and dissolution processes affecting porosity. Petrophysical analysis suggests that certain intervals of intraclastic and spherulitic grainstones-rudstones may have better reservoir properties than shrubby framestones, which are traditionally considered the best reservoir facies.

Evaluation of hydrocarbon source rock potential: Deep marine shales of Belaga Formation of Late Cretaceous-Late Eocene, Sarawak, Malaysia

Nisar Ahmed et al.

Summary: The Belaga Formation in Sarawak is interpreted as a submarine fan model deposited in the proto-South China Sea basin, consisting of sandstone, siltstone, mudstone, and black shale. Comprehensive studies on the shales in this region have not been conducted to interpret their significance as a potential source rock for oil and gas fields.

Evaluation of Paleozoic source rocks in Kuwait

Fowzia Abdullah et al.

Summary: Organic geochemical and petrographic analyses were conducted on Paleozoic core samples in Kuwait to evaluate the source rocks. The study revealed significant variations in total organic carbon content between the Khuff and Unayzah formations, with gas chromatography on oil extracts indicating a marine source. Hopane biomarkers suggested a sapropelic-marine source rock, while the pristane/phytane ratio and carbon isotope ratio indicated a dysoxic marine depositional environment.

Combining Source Rock Kinetics and Vitrinite Reflectance in Source Rock Evaluation of the Bakken Formation, Williston Basin, USA

Chioma Onwumelu et al.

Summary: The Bakken Petroleum System consists of source rocks with high hydrocarbon generation potential, depending on kinetic properties, thermal maturity, and geochemical characteristics. Experimental and numerical analyses established correlations between kinetic parameters, thermal maturity indices, and reflectance values, enhancing reservoir exploration accuracy within the Bakken Formation. The study also identified a residual compensation effect and validated the importance of understanding source rock richness and burial-depth temperatures for hydrocarbon production.

Sealing mechanisms in volcanic faulted reservoirs in Xujiaweizi extension, northern Songliao Basin, northeastern China

Bo Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the distribution of volcanic reservoirs in the Xujiaweizi half graben, highlighting the role of faults and sealing layers in controlling the integrity of reservoirs. The research shows that gas migration is vertical through faults and accumulates in fault-controlled traps. The study concludes that primary reservoirs are distributed in a sinusoidal configuration due to the Xuzhong strike-slip fault system connecting source and reservoir rocks.

Deep-water reservoir distribution on a salt-influenced slope, Santos Basin, offshore Brazil

C. R. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Studies of near-seabed data sets indicate that salt tectonics plays a key role in controlling the distribution and architecture of deep-water reservoirs in salt-influenced basins. The research in the Santos Basin, offshore Brazil, using 3D seismic and borehole data, reveals the impact of salt structures on the stratigraphic evolution of depositional systems over different tectono-stratigraphic phases. It is found that rising salt walls in the final phase dissect previously deposited deep-water systems, emphasizing the importance of mass-transport complexes deposition.

Identification of effective source rocks in different sedimentary environments and evaluation of hydrocarbon resources potential: A case study of paleogene source rocks in the Dongpu Depression, Bohai Bay Basin

Chenxi Zhu et al.

Summary: Source rocks in lacustrine rifting basins exhibit great heterogeneity, leading to imprecise assessments of hydrocarbon resources. This study focused on the Dongpu Depression, conducting organic geochemical experiments to determine effective source rocks and analyzing hydrocarbon expulsion ratios in different sedimentary environments. The results highlight the transition area as the main hydrocarbon expulsion zone, with Es-3(M) and Es-3(L) source rocks showing promising potential.
