A comparative study of three stomatal conductance models for estimating evapotranspiration in a dune ecosystem in a semi-arid region

Yongzhi Bao et al.

Summary: Accurately simulating stomatal conductance is crucial for understanding carbon and water cycle processes and improving evapotranspiration simulations. This study found that the SW-BB model performed better in estimating evapotranspiration in a mobile dune ecosystem, especially during extreme drought periods. Incorporating soil moisture into stomatal conductance models significantly improved performance, with SM showing the highest sensitivity to stomatal conductance and evapotranspiration.

Evolutionary success in arid habitats: Morpho-anatomy of succulent leaves of Crassula species from southern Africa

Marc Fradera-Soler et al.

Summary: Succulence is commonly seen as an adaptation to drought, but it can also be observed in plants typical of mesic and even hydric environments. A study on Crassula species in southern Africa found that water content is consistent regardless of habitat, while leaf morpho-anatomical traits are linked to macroclimatic conditions. The differences in mesophyll traits in Crassula may be related to water storage and CAM performance, while leaf surface properties are more associated with water conservation and possibly water uptake through hydathodes.

Fine-scale leaf chlorophyll distribution across a deciduous forest through two-step model inversion from Sentinel-2 data

Yingjie Li et al.

Summary: Leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) is a key physiological trait necessary for monitoring plant health and modeling the terrestrial carbon cycle accurately. In this study, a physically-based, two-step inversion approach was successfully used to estimate LCC at a fine spatial resolution of 20 m from Sentinel-2 MSI data. Results showed strong relationships between measured and MSI-derived leaf reflectance, as well as accurate estimations of LCC, demonstrating the potential of this approach for a wide range of terrestrial ecological applications at very fine spatial and temporal resolutions.

Comparative Study of Drought Stress Effects on Traditional and Modern Apple Cultivars

Ines Mihaljevic et al.

Summary: Genotype-dependent responses of apples to drought stress were evaluated between commercial and traditional apple cultivars, showing that traditional cultivar Crvenka exhibited better tolerance with higher photosynthetic efficiency, leaf water content, chlorophyll content, and lower lipid peroxidation. In contrast, the commercial cultivar Golden Delicious Reinders showed decreased water content in leaves, increased lipid peroxidation levels, and photoinhibition, indicating its adverse response to drought stress.

LEAF ANATOMY OF SENNA CANA (FABACEAE) IN A SEASONALLY DRY TROPICAL FOREST

Lucas Da Penha Xavier et al.

Summary: The study described the leaf morphoanatomy of Senna cana in the Brazilian Caatinga, and found that the leaf tissues show plasticity when exposed to both direct and indirect light radiation. The results demonstrate that Senna cana has high plasticity for luminosity factors, with anatomical changes promoted even under indirect light.
