Climate change shifts the timing of nutritional flux from aquatic insects

J. Ryan Shipley et al.

Summary: Climate change can lead to mismatches between resource supply and consumer demand, which can have negative effects on fitness. This study found that aquatic insects reach peak biomass earlier in the season than terrestrial insects, and the availability of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFAs) to consumers depends largely on the phenology of aquatic insect emergence. This results in nutritional phenological mismatches for consumers, as highly nutritious aquatic insects cannot be simply replaced by terrestrial insects.

Dietary availability determines metabolic conversion of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in spiders: a dual compound-specific stable isotope approach

Margaux Mathieu-Resuge et al.

Summary: The study revealed that spiders at the lake riparian area obtained lipids and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) from emergent aquatic and terrestrial insects, and the transfer of these nutrients varied depending on the distance of the spiders from the shoreline. Spiders in different habitats showed differences in the dietary sources and metabolic pathways used to fulfill their EPA demand, indicating the flexibility of spiders in adapting to their habitat and dietary availability.

The evolutionary ecology of fatty-acid variation: Implications for consumer adaptation and diversification

Cornelia W. Twining et al.

Summary: The nutritional diversity of resources can impact the adaptive evolution of consumer metabolism and diversification. Omega-3 fatty acids have a significant influence on consumer fitness. Consumers can evolve in response to resource quality variations and genetic mechanisms underpinning consumer adaptation to fatty acid distributions are important for understanding evolutionary diversification.

Taxonomic composition and lake bathymetry influence fatty acid export via emergent insects

Margaux Mathieu-Resuge et al.

Summary: The ecological role of emergent aquatic insects in exporting dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) across the freshwater-land interface is influenced by taxonomy and lake bathymetry. Additionally, the composition of PUFA transfer to land is affected by insect taxonomy, with different taxonomic groups containing varying amounts of omega-6 and omega-3 PUFA.

Warming Decreases Bioconversion of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Chironomid Larvae Maintained on Cyanobacterium Microcystis

Ursula Strandberg et al.

Summary: The research indicates that cyanobacteria dominance and warming may decrease the production of physiologically important PUFA in freshwater ecosystems, particularly by affecting the abundance of C-20 PUFA precursors in Microcystis and the bioconversion of EPA and ARA in chironomids. These changes could have cascading effects in the food web and potentially impact the availability of EPA to humans through fish consumption.

Cross-Ecosystem Linkages: Transfer of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids From Streams to Riparian Spiders via Emergent Insects

Summary: The study reveals the significant impact of aquatic PUFA subsidies on riparian spiders in terrestrial ecosystems, showing that the extent to which spiders draw on these resources can vary seasonally and depend on their lifestyle.

Use of Fatty Acids From Aquatic Prey Varies With Foraging Strategy

Cornelia W. Twining et al.

Summary: This study investigated how generalist insectivores varied in their reliance on dietary n-3 LC-PUFA from emergent aquatic insects depending on factors such as dietary flexibility and distance from a lake. Results showed that riparian spiders took advantage of aquatic subsidies, while nestling birds relied on terrestrial resources, including PUFA.
