Alternative Approach for the In Situ Measurement of Absorption Enhancement of Atmospheric Black Carbon Due to Atmospheric Mixing

Ashish Soni et al.

Summary: This study proposes an alternative approach for the in situ measurement of absorption enhancement using a thermal-optical carbon analyzer to address the uncertainties associated with black carbon radiative forcing estimation. By analyzing the absorption spectra and coefficients, the absorption properties of mixed and pure black carbon aerosols are estimated, and the role of absorbing organics (brown carbon) in light absorption is explored. The findings suggest that absorption enhancement is approximately 1.2 at the sampling sites in the Indo-Gangetic Plain, and organic absorption in near-infrared wavelengths should not be neglected.

Summary: The study conducted simultaneous observations of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) over a high-altitude site in the central Himalayas from 2014 to 2017, revealing that the springtime maximum in OC and EC concentrations was primarily due to biomass burning in northern India, while autumn/winter peaks were likely influenced by local sources.

Interstate transport of carbon monoxide and black carbon over India

Piyush Bhardwaj et al.

Summary: By using a computationally efficient tagged tracer technique in a weather forecasting model, this study analyzes the contribution of interstate pollution transport to surface carbon monoxide and black carbon levels in different regions of India. Strong relationships between direct emissions and concentrations of CO and BC were observed, with interstate transport contributing significantly in over one third of Indian states. The findings suggest a need to expand India's air quality management framework to address pollution exchange between states.
