Performance of Seismic Observation by Distributed Acoustic Sensing Technology Using a Seafloor Cable Off Sanriku, Japan

Masanao Shinohara et al.

Summary: The distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) measurement, which uses an optical fiber as a sensor, has gained popularity in seismic observations. Applying DAS to seafloor cables increases data quantity in marine areas. Comparisons with conventional seismometers show high coherence in DAS measurements.

Empirical Investigations of the Instrument Response for Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) across 17 Octaves

Patrick Paitz et al.

Summary: Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) has the potential to revolutionize geophysical ground-motion measurements by utilizing existing fiber-optic infrastructure, but ensuring accurate amplitude and phase information is crucial. The instrument response variations are influenced by factors such as dispersion and incorrect ground-motion observations. Experimental results show minimal standard deviations in amplitude and phase responses across different frequency ranges, supporting the integration of DAS-based strain measurements into full-waveform inversion methods for improved data quality.

Surface wave tomography using 3D active-source seismic data

Ilaria Barone et al.

Summary: Surface wave tomography is a powerful technique used to retrieve 3D shear-wave velocity models at a regional scale. By applying this technique to 3D active-source data and testing different tomography algorithms, it was found that the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm achieved the lowest misfit to the input model. The resulting phase-velocity maps showed good correspondence and highlighted the same geologic structures, leading to the retrieval of a 3D S-wave velocity model through depth inversion of individual dispersion curves.

Sensing Shallow Structure and Traffic Noise with Fiber-optic Internet Cables in an Urban Area

Zhenghong Song et al.

Summary: Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) is a novel seismic observation system using fiber-optic cables as sensing units, allowing for ultrahigh density observations. This study utilized a telecom fiber-optic internet cable for recording ambient noise and constructing a S-wave velocity model, revealing a low-velocity zone within the structure.

Radon domain interferometric interpolation of sparse seismic data

Jie Shao et al.

Summary: The study utilized a four-step Radon domain interferometric interpolation method to process sparse seismic data, which involved generating synthetic seismic data, transforming into the Radon domain, conducting seismic interferometric interpolation, and applying a matching filter. The method effectively interpolated sparse seismic data, yielding more accurate results compared to traditional methods and showing less sensitivity to water layer depth and impedance contrast of the water bottom.

Passive multichannel analysis of surface waves using 1D and 2D receiver arrays

Sarah L. Morton et al.

Summary: The study presents a new alternative technique for surface-wave analysis of passive data, using seismic multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) method with 2D and 1D receiver arrays. The hybrid 1D 2D passive MASW approach successfully approximates the quality advantages of active MASW method and proves beneficial for monitoring potential risks to groundwater and infrastructure with reduced labor costs.
