Correlation between Carbapenem Consumption and Carbapenems Susceptibility Profiles of Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in an Academic Medical Center in Thailand

Taniya Paiboonvong et al.

Summary: The study reveals a clear association between carbapenem consumption and the susceptibility of A. baumannii, with a statistically significant negative correlation between ertapenem consumption and the susceptibility of A. baumannii to imipenem and meropenem. While there is a moderate negative correlation between imipenem use and MDR P. aeruginosa, it lacks statistical significance. These findings suggest the need for optimized carbapenem prescription policies to tackle resistant organisms.

Decreased Antibiotic Consumption Coincided with Reduction in Bacteremia Caused by Bacterial Species with Respiratory Transmission Potential during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Vincent Chi-Chung Cheng et al.

Summary: Nonpharmaceutical interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong have led to a reduction in wholesale antibiotic supply and a significant decrease in community-onset bacteremia caused by common bacterial species. However, no reduction was observed in hospital-onset bacteremia caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli.

Identifying Targets for Antibiotic Use for the Management of Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAb) in Hospitals-A Multi-Centre Nonlinear Time-Series Study

Zainab Said Al-Hashimy et al.

Summary: Solutions are needed to balance access to effective antimicrobials with the need to control resistance. This study aims to identify thresholds of population antibiotic use associated with carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAb) incidence across six hospitals in Oman. Different thresholds of antibiotic use were identified, highlighting the need for tailored analysis based on each hospital's data. These thresholds can be used to set targets for antimicrobial stewardship and control CRAb incidence.

Alcohol-Based Hand Sanitizers: Does Gelling Agent Really Matter?

Ivana d'Angelo et al.

Summary: Hand hygiene, social distancing, and face covering are crucial in preventing the spread of Coronavirus. This study investigated the effect of different gelling agents and their concentrations on the properties and antimicrobial activity of alcohol-based hand sanitizers (ABHSs). The results showed that cellulose polymers interacting with ethanol may lead to a slight reduction in the biocidal activity of ABHSs. Carbopol was found to be one of the best thickener agents for ABHS formulations, emphasizing the importance of choosing the right gelling agent.

Summary: In the past 5 years, a total of 141 CR Kp and 60 CR Ab cases were hospitalized in a German university hospital, corresponding to 118 unique patients. The incidences of CR Kp and CR Ab were 0.045 and 0.019 per 100 inpatient cases, respectively. The clinical infection rates were 17.0% in CR Kp group and 35.0% in CR Ab group, indicating a higher clinical impact among CR Ab cases. Further evaluation is needed for the efficiency of weekly microbiologic screening.

Shuk-Ching Wong et al.

Summary: By implementing directly observed environmental disinfection (DOED) practices in community isolation and treatment facilities in Hong Kong, along with infection control training for healthcare workers and cleaning staff, zero environmental contamination and nosocomial transmission of SARS-CoV-2 were achieved. This involved immediate environmental disinfection following observations of patient and staff activities, with air and environmental samples collected within patient areas testing negative for SARS-CoV-2. Compliance with mask wearing among patients was also recorded at 100%.

The use of multi-pronged screening strategy to understand the epidemiology of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in Hong Kong: transition from epidemic to endemic setting

Shuk-Ching Wong et al.

Summary: A multi-pronged screening strategy for carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) was implemented in the West healthcare network in Hong Kong. The incidence of CPE increased significantly from 2012 to 2018, but appropriate infection control measures helped to reduce the incidence of nosocomial CPE. People who frequently purchased raw meat and vegetables from wet markets were found to have a higher risk of community acquisition of CPE. Strategic control measures for CPE should be implemented in both hospital and community settings.
